Directory Submission FAQ

For definitions see our directory glossary.

Are your submissions performed using an automated script?
No, our submissions are done manually. We may use tools to speed up the repetitive typing process but a person visits each and every directory and selects the most appropriate category. The category URL is then included in the report that we provide you after submissions are complete.

What payment methods do you accept?
See our payment options.

Do you guarantee that our site will be listed in all the directories you submit to?
Not at all. We monitor the directories that we submit to and change our list constantly. Sites that are no longer adding free listings are removed frequently.
The quality of your site, your industry and the quality of your submission information can affect your approval rate. The final decision is up to the directory editor.

How will I know what directories my site has been submitted to?
Once submissions have been completed, we will provide you with a report that includes a list of directories, the date and exact category submitted to. Here a is sample report.

What if I have already submitted to some directories?
When we submit your site, the directory will inform us if your site is already listed. We will substitute that directory with another from our submissions list. Feel free to inform us if you have a list of directories that you do not want us to submit to.

Do you submit to dmoz.org?
We no longer submit to DMOZ. Based on our experience, clients prefer to submit to DMOZ themselves. DMOZ is a unique directory that often takes years to get in. A second submission could put you at the end of the line. Special care should also be taken in creating your title and descriptions for DMOZ submission.

How long will it take?
We usually start submissions within 2-5 business days from receipt of your payment. If you choose the regular submission option your order should be completed the day it is started If you choose the "Slow submission" option we will submit your site to 15 to 20 directories per day (75 to 100 per week). If you choose the "Very Slow submission" option we will submit your site to 10 to 12 directories per day (50 to 60 per week). In rare occasions excessive workload may cause us to take a couple of extra days to complete your order.

What type of sites can be submitted?
We accept most sites. Please consult our quality guidelines. Sites must be in the English language as the directories we submit to are English.

Some submission services submit to 100 or even 2000 general directories. Why do you submit to fewer directories?

We can easily submit to thousands of general directories but we eliminate directories that are not truly SEO friendly. We actually keep our own list of free directories with over 3000 listings.
The size of our submission list is limited by the following factors:
1. We ensure that the directories pass PageRank from the main listing page. We use directories that are dofollow and provide direct links.
2. We remove directories that do not regularly approve free submissions. Many free directories are inactive or only approve paid submissions.
3. We ensure that the directory is in Google's good books. We ensure that it has a least 50 indexed pages and is not penalized.
3. We avoid large networks of directories hosted on the same IP. We submit to a maximum of 1 directory from the same IP.
4. We don't submit to directories with questionable practices.

Is it possible to get penalized for gaining too many links too fast?

Most of the new links you receive will be indexed by the Search engines over the next month or two. The sites we submit to vary from PR5 to PR0. With free directories, your site is often listed on many new pages that may not get crawled for weeks. Approvals occur anywhere from the the first day to 3 months later.
There is always chance that directory submissions can have negative effects but I have not seen it with my own sites yet. In my opinion it is far riskier purchasing high PR links. If your site is fairly new, I would suggest not doing any advertising in the weeks that follow your submissions.

Are submissions to PR0 directories worthwhile?
Yes they are. Your chances of having your site approved are much better with the directories that are just starting up. You can also get a good spot in your category. These sites will gain PR as time goes by. Many of these could become high quality paid directories, thus providing you with a free link. Many of the high PR sites are simply dropped domain names that are out to make a quick buck. These sites often lose their PR in the next Google update or two.

My site has high PR. Can I submit to low PR directories.
Absolutely. In fact, a natural link profile should include a mix of high and low PageRank sites.

I have used your service before. Why do you submit to more low PR directories than other services?
We would love to submit to high PR directories but our efforts would be pointless if these directories never approve the submission. Many high PR directories have not added a free submission for years. These exist as free directories to try to "upsell" people into featured links. A bait and switch technique. With high PR directories you have to look out for dropped domains in which directory owners buy an expired domain name with high PR. These sites often lose their PR in the months to follow.

How long should my titles and descriptions be?
There is no exact answer but titles should generally be: 3-5 words. A 2 word title is good but many directories only allow a particular title to be used once in a category. A short title like "Criminal lawyer" may already be on the directory. A better choice may be "Criminal lawyer - Chicago, Illinois". If you choose short titles please include additional titles.
Descriptions should be 200-250 characters. Many directories now require a minimum of 200 characters.

Should I remove my PPC ads at the time of submissions?
Removing Adsense type ads will increase your approval rate, especially if you have pages have more PPC ads than content or if the ads are in the prime page locations. If your ads are excessive, we would recommend removing some of them, at least from your home page, for 2-3 weeks. See also our tips for increasing your approval rates.
